Comfort turn signal animation (BMW E32)

How It All Started

If you often switch between different cars, you’ll know the feeling: you get into one, and it just works differently than what you’re used to. Sometimes, something you’ve come to rely on simply isn’t there – and that can be surprisingly irritating.

Of course, every manufacturer has its quirks – and even within the same brand there can be big differences. But once you’ve gotten used to certain simple, everyday features – like the comfort blinker – their absence becomes noticeable.

One of those features for me was the comfort blinker, common in modern cars: tap the indicator stalk once and the car blinks three times automatically. My friends noticed it right away: “Classic BMW driver – your indicator barely flashed once!”

Functional & Implementation Criteria

That’s when I decided this had to be added – built into the OEM relay, without any wire cutting, clean and factory-style.

The prototype worked so well in my own E36 Compact (and later in my son’s E34 Touring) that friends encouraged me to make more. Special thanks to my friend Rafi, who happily took on the programming and supported the technical side of the project. :)

Compatible BMW models: this retrofit isn’t just for the E36 – it also works with the indicator relays used in the E31, E32 and E34 models from the same era.
